Captivate Talent recruits founding Account Executives for seed and Series A B2B startups in the US and Canada that are ready to move past founder-led sales. We've made 200+ AE hires, with an average of 43 days to hire, finding sellers who have built pipeline from zero and helped write the first sales playbook.

Most founding AE searches we run are for seed and Series A B2B startups. We work with companies through Series C.
Your first seller, the next few AEs after them, and the first Head of Sales when that's the right call.
Founding AEs, first sales teams and AE pods at seed to Series C B2B startups, from horizontal SaaS to vertical software.
That's an average. Timing depends on your location, comp and how specialized the role is, and we'll set expectations together on the first call. We recruit across the US and Canada.
The same hands-on process we run for every sales search, calibrated for your first seller.
Kickoff. A deep dive with your recruiter on what you sell, who you sell to and where founder-led sales is breaking.
A curated list of qualified candidates, including people who aren't actively looking, so you can react to real profiles early.
Evaluation. We assess each candidate's sales process, track record and how they've built pipeline without a big brand behind them.
Interviews. You get a candidate tracker and real-time feedback through every round, over Slack, WhatsApp or email.
We help you set comp and close the offer, then stay in touch with advice as your team grows.
Sellers who were one of the first few salespeople at a seed or Series A company.
People who self-source pipeline and can show it, not reps who lived off inbound.
If you sell into a specific industry or buyer, we look for sellers who already know that world, so they're credible from the first call.
Comfortable with an unfinished product, thin collateral and a founder looking over their shoulder.
Founders ask us the same five questions before their first sales hire. Here are our answers, along with what VCs and operators have told us on Human First.
A founding Account Executive is a startup's first dedicated salesperson. They close deals while turning what the founder knows into a repeatable sales process. That means prospecting without a brand behind them, running discovery and demos, closing, and feeding what they hear back to the founders on messaging, pricing and product.
There's no universal ARR milestone. Some founders are ready at $500K, and others still have work to do at $2M. The better test comes from Paddle co-founder Harrison Rose: if you weren't in the room, could a rep sell this in a repeatable way without you? Then run the math. Crane Ventures partner Rav Dhaliwal points out that a $300K OTE AE needs $4.5M to $6M in qualified pipeline in year one, and will only generate 30 to 50% of it themselves. If you can't yet point to a repeatable ICP, a process you could teach, and a consistent source of pipeline, you may need a GTM associate or more founder-led selling first.
If your motion mostly works and you need someone to scale it, you want a hungry seller: a founding AE. If you're still finding the motion, you need more strategic range: a founding Head of Sales who can build the playbook. Sometimes the search tells you. If strong closers keep falling short because the role needs someone to build the playbook, you probably need a Head of Sales. We'll tell you which one you need, even if it's not the search you came in for.
Logos and quota attainment can hide a lot. A seller at a Series C company was operating inside a system someone else built. Cherry Ventures' Ben Newsome weights first sales hires about 75% on behavior and 25% on experience, and so do we. We look for self-sourced pipeline and wins without a big brand behind them. We dig into how candidates built their numbers, not just the numbers, and help you design interviews that test for the work the role actually involves.
We walk through fees and our guarantee on the first call, based on the role and scope of the search. Every search is led by an experienced recruiter who stays with you from kickoff to signed offer.

Yes. We've made 200+ AE hires at seed to Series C B2B startups, including founding AEs. MeltPlan hired two founding AEs at seed, and at Lace.ai the founding AE was the first of six AEs we placed. We're happy to share examples closer to your stage and market on a call.
Usually once founders have closed a repeatable set of deals, know who the buyer is, and have more pipeline than they can work. A $300K OTE AE needs roughly $4.5M to $6M in qualified pipeline in year one. If the motion is still unproven, you may need a founding Head of Sales, a GTM associate, or more founder-led selling first.
Our average time to hire is 43 days, but it varies with your location, comp range and how specialized the role is. We'll walk you through what to expect on the first call and guide you through every step, so you get the right hire for your company.
You'll know who your recruiter is from the first call. One experienced recruiter leads your search from kickoff to signed offer, so you're never handed off to someone new. You can meet the team on our About page.
We look for self-sourced pipeline, full-cycle ownership and wins without a big brand or SDR team behind them. Then we dig into how candidates built those numbers and help you design interviews that test for the real work.
Yes. We benchmark base, OTE and equity against current market data for your stage and location, and manage the offer through signature.
Seed to Series C B2B tech startups in the US and Canada, from horizontal SaaS to vertical software and AI products. We also help international startups build their first US sales team.
We adjust with you. Sometimes candidate feedback shows the role needs to build the playbook, not just sell. When that happens, we'll tell you and recalibrate the search together.
Yes. Lace.ai started with a founding AE and went on to hire five more AEs, a Head of Customer Success and a VP of Sales through Captivate.
